Apple News – OS X Lion, iOS, iCloud

Apple Previews the New Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud Service at WWDC.

At WWDC 11’s Keynote, Steve Jobs and company raised the curtains to show off their upcoming updates to Mac’s new operating system, Lion. Also, featured the new iOS 5 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, including the new iCloud Service.

Mac OS X Lion

Apple CEO Steve Jobs first introduced Mac OS X Lion back in October, and since then has added more features and now has a delivery date of July. The update will be $30 from the Mac App Store.

New and Updated Features to Mac OS X Lion include:

Multi-Touch gestures, Full-Screen Apps, Mission Control, Mac App Store, Launchpad, Resume, Auto Save & Versions, AirDrop, and Mail.

iOS 5

First revealed today at the Keynote, Scott Forstall showed off some of new feature and updates. It has a planned release date for this Fall and will be compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, iPod touch 3rd generation, and iPod touch 4th generation.

Some of the new features are a New Notification Center, Twitter integration, new messaging service and reminders. There is Newsstand, an app for viewing your subscriptions to magazines and newspapers, and also updates / enhancements to Camera, Photos, and Safari. Finally, all iOS 5 devices will be ‘PC Free’… meaning that a computer is not required for setup.

iCloud

It was rumored to be just a iTunes ‘Cloud Service,’ but is much more an extension of your iOS Device. The new iCloud service will be FREE to iOS 5 users and is replacing the current MobileMe (info about this transition can be found here). It will be available this Fall in concurrent with the iOS 5 release.

iCloud will usher in wireless internet pushing and syncing of you Contacts, Calendar, Mail, Apps, Books and Documents. It also, gives you Photo Streaming service and Backup of your device. You’ll be able to download all you music purchased from iTunes Store and automatically sync new purchased songs to all your devices. For an extra $25 annually, you can scan your entire iTunes music library then ‘Match’ any songs on the iTunes Store and download to all of your devices.
